Material Matters
Portland International Airport has more than 11 acres of carpet. As older carpet in the airport is replaced, we're sourcing new materials with the smallest environmental footprint. Newly installed carpet in the airport concourse connector contains between 65-77 percent recycled materials; of that percentage, anywhere from 33-46 percent is from post-industrial sources. The carpet's manufacturer also purchases certified offsets to make the carpet a carbon-neutral material.
Similar carpet was used in our LEED-platinum certified headquarters building, where we chose our construction and finish materials carefully. In addition to the carpet, cubicle frames are made of recycled metal, while office chairs can be taken apart at the end of their lifespan so components can be recycled. Other building materials were selected from recycled, recyclable, or easily renewable options.
