Media Guidelines

Citizens have the right to be fully informed about the activities of the Port of Portland, and the Port strives to be transparent with the help of its media relations staff. Although many of our operational areas are closed to the general public because of security, safety, and operational concerns, the Port makes allowances for the media to visit Port facilities and properties, when possible.

Port media relations strives to accommodate media on Port-owned and controlled property, with the following exceptions:

  • Where safety and operational conditions may subject media representatives to injury or harm. Port management has the exclusive discretion to determine the hazards of the situation.
  • Where the physical presence of the media representatives hinders Port operations, the operations of the Port’s lessees, contractors, or in emergency situations, hinders Port staff’s ability to resolve a crisis.
  • Where portions of the Port property or facilities are leased to a private concern or if private property is on Port property, for example, auto importers and airlines. In these cases, permission for media access rests with the lessee or private property owner.

Your cooperation with media visits to our facilities is appreciated. Except news media, commercial photography/filming requires a permit.
