PIC Corps of Engineers Mitigation Site

Background
This project was a result of mitigation for impacts from property development and roadway crossings at Portland International Center. Approximately 1.2 acres of shrub wetland and 1.25 acres of drainage way with fringe emergent wetland were impacted. The mitigation site, which consisted of a 2.5-acre parcel near the confluence of the major ditch systems on the site, was selected in 1988.

Mitigation Plan
Mitigation involved excavating to create a meandering channel and planting native vegetation adjacent to the channel. Construction of the site took place in 1988-1989, and the planting plan comprised Oregon ash, chokecherry, cascara, elderberry and red-osier dogwood.

Status
Vegetation maintenance of the site continues on an annual basis. Blackberries and teasel are removed by mowing and chemical means. There has been some damage to plants due to animal foraging, but natural species recruitment remains high.
