Street Fair Celebrates PDX on July 12

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PORTLAND, ORE. (July 2, 2008) – Street Fair Celebrates PDX on July 12

An airport is no place for clowning around—unless, of course, you’re part of the Nomadic Theater Company performing Sat., July 12 at the first-ever Portland International Airport Air Fair, held from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at PDX.

The community is invited to come and learn more about how the airport operates, its projects, and the vital role it plays in the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan area’s livability.  This fun, free, event showcases airport interests, partners and stakeholders, and other projects occurring in the vicinity of the airport.

Port of Portland Aviation departments and other partner organizations join the theater company and live musical entertainment on the upper, outer roadway in front of the PDX terminal building under the canopy—an area normally reserved for commercial traffic. The event will transform the closed road into a festive celebration of the airport.

The PDX Air Fair offers events, activities and entertainment for the whole family:

  • Airfield Tours—lasting roughly an hour, this bus tour travels around the entire airfield and provides an up close look at the infrastructure aircraft use at PDX. Secure a spot on the tour bus by registering in advance online at www.pdx.com;
  • Port of Portland Police K-9 unit plastics explosives detection demonstrations;
  • Airport Fire Department staff and equipment available to answer questions and allow children to try on firefighting uniforms;
  • Oregon Air National Guard—“History of Military Aviation” display and a uniformed F-15 pilot available to answer questions;
  • Airport Wildlife, Operations and Maintenance—vehicles on display and staff on hand to answer questions and provide information about responsibilities around the airfield;
  • Information tables about airport and partner projects including: Deicing, North Runway Extension, Airport Futures, Multnomah County Drainage District, Oregon Department of Transportation, and the City of Portland;
  • Musical entertainment throughout the event by White Rhino Marimba Band;
  • Nomadic Theater Company—two “How To Fly” performances which include a combination of acrobatics, juggling and clowning around;
  • Food and beverages will be available at the Air Fair site in coordination with special promotions from food and retail establishments inside the terminal during the event

MAX travel is encouraged with a free all-zone ticket home for those who ride transit to get to the event.  Ride a bike to the event and receive a free gift at the registration table. Garage parking will be validated for Air Fair attendees. Additional information available online: www.pdx.com.
