NEW
LECTURE SERIES HIGHLIGHTS PORTLAND’S WORKING HARBOR
“Portland Harbor: Behind the Scenes” kicks off Wednesday evening
at St. John’s Theater and Pub
The Working Waterfront Coalition and the Port of Portland will begin a
series of tours and lectures this week highlighting various aspects of the
working waterfronts of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers in a new series
called “Portland Harbor: Behind the Scenes.”
The first installment of the series, “The Working Waterfront; Past, Present,
Future,” will be held Wednesday evening from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the St.
John’s Theater and Pub.
Historically, civilization flourishes around rivers because of the development
of trade, commerce and industry on their banks. Portland is no exception. The
first lecture in the series will highlight the rich history of the area’s
riverfront development, how rivers are integral to this region’s continual
evolution, and how they are intertwined with the state’s transportation and
trade-reliant industries and workforce.
Former Director of the Oregon Historical Society, Chet Orloff and the
Working Waterfront Coalition’s Ann Gardner are guest lecturers for this
inaugural event.
The “Portland Harbor: Behind the Scenes” series will span several months and
include representatives from a variety of waterfront businesses. Additional
session details will be posted on the Port of Portland’s website, www.portofportland.com.
