Orville and Wilbur
The Port of Portland has recruited Orville and Wilbur Wright characters this summer to recognize and thank the 14 airlines serving PDX.

This summer Portland area residents may encounter a couple of characters from aviation history—Orville and Wilbur Wright—or at least a couple of local folks portraying the famous duo.  No, it is not the next Hollywood film production.  It is a fun and engaging campaign the Port of Portland is launching to show its appreciation to all 14 of Portland International Airport’s air carriers—airlines that bring jobs and economic stability to our region and the opportunity to travel, learn and experience the world.

The campaign will include Wright Brothers appearances at air shows, charity events, airports and more as well as an on-line essay contest.

“Part of what makes PDX one of the best airports in the country is the excellent services provided by our air carriers,” said Steve Schreiber, Port aviation director. “We just believe it is important to pause and recognize the role that all of the PDX carriers play in our economy and our lives.”

PDX has 14 airline carriers providing convenient, direct nonstop service to 49 domestic and international destinations and connections to nearly anywhere in the country or around the globe. Those same air services generate a total airport and visitor direct business revenue of $4.9 billion for our region, more than 59,000 local jobs and about $176 million in state and local taxes.

The campaign also includes an essay contest. Writers nine years of age or older are being asked to provide a 250-word essay about how their lives have been improved by any or all of the 14 PDX carriers. A total of seven prizes will be awarded in three categories: two for youth ages 9 to 13; two for youth ages 14 to 18 and three for adults over 18. Adult winners will each receive $1,000 travel vouchers and the youth winners will each receive $500 travel vouchers. Deadline for entries is August 17.
