PORTLAND,
ORE. (Aug. 15, 2012) – Portland
Ranks 15th in Top 50 Cities for Global Trade
Global Trade Magazine has ranked the Portland metro region 15th
among the top 50 U.S. cities for global trade based on export volume.
Using statistics compiled by the International Trade Association,
the publication acknowledged the Portland-Vancouver-Beaverton area for its
exports of computers and electronic products, transportation equipment and crop
production. With export totals of $18.5 billion, Portland came in right behind
San Francisco ($21.4 billion) and San Juan Puerto Rico ($20.4 billion.)
The ranking echoes the findings of a recent Brookings Institute
study which found that Portland was one of the top 20 U.S. metropolitan areas
in export strength and was second among all U.S. metro areas in terms of export
value growth between 2003 and 2008. Another study conducted by a number of
local business associations and the Port of Portland estimated that more than
286,000 metro area jobs are associated with trade.
“Exports have been a cornerstone of our region’s success in the
international marketplace for over a century,” said Bill Wyatt, executive
director at Port of Portland. “Thanks to an efficient system of road, rail,
river and runway transportation infrastructure, regional businesses are able to
access markets across the globe, grow their operations and stimulate the local
economy.”
