PORTLAND, ORE. (Sept. 4, 2012) – Tours Scheduled for PDX Deicing Treatment Facility
The Port of Portland
invites the community to participate in guided tours of its newly expanded
Portland International Airport deicing stormwater collection system.
Tours are scheduled every
30 minutes from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at the PDX deicing treatment
facility at 10150 NE 33rd Dr. in Portland. Those interested should contact Lisa
Timmerman at lisa.timmerman@portofportland.com or 503.415.6047.
Aircraft and airfield
deicing is conducted to ensure flight safety when the weather is cold, and the
deicing system captures deicing runoff that mixes with stormwater. The
expansion includes a new 3-million gallon concentrated runoff storage tank, two
6.5-million gallon dilute runoff storage tanks, and three pump stations. Also
included is a new treatment facility, more than six miles of underground
piping, and an outfall to the Columbia River. The treatment facility uses an
anaerobic fluidized bed biological reactor to break down deicing material in
stormwater, and is one of only three of its kind in the nation.
