PORTLAND,
ORE. (March 12, 2013) – “Music Makers” Exhibit Opens at PDX
 |
| "Wise-N-Uke Lapslide Baritone" created by local artist and luthier, Mark Roberts |
An
eloquent exhibit that combines the art of music and sound is on display at
Portland International Airport through late August.
Located
in Concourse A, the exhibit showcases the works of eight regional luthiers,
including four violins from the Portland Youth Philharmonic’s Painted Violin
Project. Luthiers construct stringed instruments from design to completion.
These beautifully handcrafted, one-of-a-kind instruments incorporate
700-year-old reclaimed wood, stunning inlays and rosettes, tropical woods and
scalloped fretboards to attract music lovers and travelers alike.
Featured
luthiers include: Kerry Char, Mike Doolin, Patrick “Doc” Huff, Josh Humphrey,
Ray Kraut, Mark Roberts, Tyler Stuart, and Peter Tsiorba. In addition, regional
artists were invited to recreate a series of decommissioned violins. Hayley
Barker, Jennifer Joyce, Mona Cordell, Michael De Forest, and Suzy Root with
Matt Raphael gave new life to the four violins on display through mid-April.
These violins, along with 26 others, will be sold at a live auction on April 19
at the Governor Hotel to benefit the Portland Youth Philharmonic.
PDX’s
arts program is designed to showcase the dynamic cultural life of the Northwest
and showcase a variety of work through ongoing relationships with regional
artists and other art organizations, museums and educational institutions.
