Analyzing and understanding the history of Willamette River pollution takes some detective work. Come hear a fascinating historical perspective on the early years of Willamette River pollution, from the 1920s into the 1970s, highlighting the importance of community voices in the process.

Presented by James V. Hillegas based upon his new book exploring the years before Governor Tom McCall’s efforts to clean up the river, as well as McCall’s place within the broader national context of environmental history.

Presenter:
James V. Hillegas, M.A. in history from Portland State University, specializes in the study of the twentieth-century urban environment. His book on Willamette River pollution abatement is currently at an academic press. From 2009 to 2011, he served as the editorial coordinator of the Oregon Encyclopedia and was an instructor at Portland State University. From 2006 to 2008, he was an editorial fellow for the Pacific Historical Review. He earned his B.A. in 2004 from Western Washington University.

Portland Harbor Partnership is a public-private partnership working in cooperation with Portland State University and Oregon State University to support a broad community outreach effort. The purpose of this outreach is to raise awareness about the Superfund Site and to encourage everyone to have a voice in the future of Portland Harbor and the river overall. Portland Harbor Partners include the Port of Portland, the Oregon Department of State Lands, Calbag Metals, Evraz Portland, Gunderson LLC, NW Natural, Schnitzer Steel, and Vigor Industrial.
