Port of Portland Launches New Interactive Terminal-6 Web Site

Anyone can now get into the nitty-gritty of international trade via a new interactive section on the Port of Portland’s Web site. Internet surfers can virtually drop into the heart of the region’s main cargo hub with a step-by-step tour of commerce, from the time a ship enters the Columbia River to its unloading at the Port’s Terminal 6 (T-6) container terminal and intermodal yard.

Developed to help ocean container carriers visualize container shipping on the Columbia River, the site also serves as an online, interactive “Container Shipping 101” class for those outside the shipping industry. “Anyone interested in how the TV’s, shoes, clothes, furniture and other products stamped with “Made in China” are transported from China should visit this site,” said Port Executive Director Bill Wyatt. “The transportation of these products involves a fascinating array of 1,000-foot long ships, powerful tugboats, 290-foot tall cranes, futuristic-looking container yard equipment, mile-long trains and thousands of trucks.  The video, photos and graphics on our new site do a great job explaining how all of this equipment works together here at the Port's T-6.”

Watch videos of helicopters lowering bar pilots onto container ships, ships passing under Columbia River bridges and pulling into T-6, and container loading and handling operations.  Or get a birds-eye view with “T-6 Aerial Views,” an interactive Web tool offering high resolution photos with the ability to zoom into areas which T-6 viewers want to see in greater detail.

“The new site will benefit our efforts to attract additional container carrier service to Portland,” said Port Liner Development Manager Greg Borossay. “We visit a number of container carriers interested in Portland every month, and with this new Web site, we can virtually bring the Columbia River and T-6 with us.”
