You Asked and the Port Delivered!
Construction Begins Soon on Bike and Pedestrian Facilities

Holding plans for new bicycle and pedestrian connections to the airport terminal, Jason Gately, Port of Portland project manager, stands on the north end of the lower roadway. The plans also call for a bicycle parking area with approximately 80 spaces available free to airport employees.

Preparations are underway to provide new bike and pedestrian facility connections at Portland International Airport.

“We’re looking to improve access to the terminal from the north, south, east, and west for pedestrians and bicyclists,” said Jason Gately, Port of Portland project manager. “We’re also hoping that by enhancing terminal access for bicyclists, airport employees will have the option to ride, rather than drive, to work on a regular basis.”

Plans call for a sidewalk to run the length of Frontage Road, providing convenient access to the terminal, as well as other on-airport tenant facilities, including the Hampton Inn Portland-Airport and the Sheraton Portland Airport Hotel. Related improvements to Frontage Road include a complete repaving and sealing of the roadway, beginning in late June. Already, Port officials have started preparing for extending existing bike and pedestrian connections to the north end of the lower roadway.

An advisory committee of Port and airport employees met last fall to help guide the design phase of a new bicycle parking area, planned for under the north end of the lower roadway. The parking area will boast approximately 80 free bike spaces available on a first-come-first-serve basis. To keep bikes secure, cyclists will need a key code to enter and exit the parking area, which will also use cyclone fencing to prevent theft.

Construction also begins next month on sidewalk enhancements along both sides of Northeast 82nd Avenue, between Air Cargo and Alderwood roads. Auto lanes in this area will undergo restriping to include bike lanes. The Port will also install pedestrian crossing improvements at the intersection of Northeast 82nd and Air Cargo Road. The City of Portland will make similar pedestrian crossing improvements at the intersection of Northeast 82nd and Alderwood, which falls outside airport property.

Environmental Excellence Earns United Airlines and Gustav’s High Honors

Accepting an award for environmental excellence, Susan O’Neil, general manager of Gustav’s, is joined by Port Commission President Jay Waldron and Port Executive Director Bill Wyatt. The Port honored Gustav’s for achievements in waste reduction after installing an industrial-sized dishwasher.

For outstanding environmental performance in their operations at Portland International Airport, United Airlines and Gustav’s Pub & Grill received “Aviation Tenant Environmental Excellence Awards” from Port of Portland commissioners on April 13.

The Port honored Gustav’s for achievements in waste reduction for installing an industrial-sized dishwasher and replacing disposable plastic ware with reusable dinnerware and silverware. The improvements resulted in the elimination of more than 34,000 pounds of plastic from the airport’s waste stream last year.

United Airlines earned praise for both waste reduction and recycling. The airline reduced hazardous waste generation by replacing parts-washing and painting equipment and chemicals with more environmentally friendly products. Established in 2001, the Aviation Tenant Environmental Excellence Awards program recognizes exemplary environmental efforts by tenants at Port-operated airports.
