Our teams receive special training to help us keep the airport and surrounding communities safe.
We’re here to make PDX a safe, welcoming place for everyone. Port officers have the same authority as other police departments. We also help travelers move efficiently through the airport and enforce federal security rules.
Our officers respond to crimes in progress, traffic accidents, missing persons cases, and other emergencies. They’re also proactive, frequently patrolling the areas around PDX and enforcing the Port’s security plan. We also have two clinicians on site to assist on calls involving someone in mental or behavioral health crisis. And when high-profile people come through, we’re there to help minimize disruption.
PDX not only brings travelers together. It’s also where federal, state, and local partners collaborate to serve the public. We work with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to uphold the law and maintain security in complex situations.
We’re here to serve you. Visit us on the third floor of the Rental Car Center building.

Portland Airport Fire and Rescue plays a key role in the operational readiness of Portland International Airport. If there’s an incident at PDX, our well-trained team is the first to respond.
The Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) program prepares each member of the department for an aircraft-related accident by providing special training specific to aircraft fires and evacuation. This training includes regular drills and practice using specialized trucks and firefighting agents such as fluorine free foam, dry chemicals, and clean agents. Firefighters must also complete annual FAA regulatory training to include live fire training to maintain certification. To learn how to fight fires in and around buildings, new entry level team members also attend a 12-week structural fire academy plus training specific to PDX facilities.
Our team doesn’t only respond to fires. We’re first responders for all types of medical emergencies at or near PDX, including water rescues on the Columbia River. We have flotation equipment for more than 200 passengers and collaborate with regional partners through a mutual aid agreement, allowing us to call upon additional resources when needed.
